Color matching is one of the most common concerns in packaging. A brand’s signature color must look the same on every batch, every substrate and every shelf. Delta E is the language we use to control that consistency.
What is Delta E?
Delta E (ΔE) is a numeric measure of color difference. It compares a produced color to a target color using a color space such as CIE Lab. The lower the Delta E, the closer the match.

Most packaging buyers specify a Delta E tolerance of 2.0 or less for critical brand colors.
How Delta E is measured
We measure color with a spectrophotometer. The device shines light on the printed surface and records how much light is reflected at each wavelength. The software converts this into Lab values and calculates Delta E against the target.
The measurement is influenced by:
- Substrate color and texture
- Ink density
- Lamination or coating
- Lighting conditions
- Viewing angle
For this reason, we always measure under standard D65 lighting and calibrate instruments daily.
Why Delta E matters in packaging
Brand colors are a form of intellectual property. When a customer sees your box on a shelf, they expect the color to match their memory of your brand. A Delta E drift of 3 or 4 can make the package look faded, off-tone or even counterfeit.
Delta E also matters when the same color appears on different materials. A logo printed on art paper, kraft paper and corrugated liner may look different even with the same ink. We adjust ink formulations to hit the same Delta E target across substrates.
Delta E vs visual approval
Delta E is objective, but it is not the whole story. Some colors are more visually sensitive than their Delta E number suggests. A neutral grey with Delta E 1.5 may look worse than a bright orange with Delta E 2.0 because human eyes are more sensitive to shifts in grey.
We use Delta E as a control tool, but we also compare the production sample to the approved standard under controlled lighting. Both must pass.
Real example: matching a luxury blue
A skincare brand specified a deep navy blue for a rigid box. Their approved standard was a coated Pantone swatch. On our first production sample, the measured Delta E was 2.8 — technically close, but visibly duller than the target. We increased ink density and adjusted the magenta component. The next sample measured Delta E 1.4 and matched the brand’s expectation.
Specifying Delta E in your brief
Buyers should include a Delta E tolerance in the quality specification. A typical statement is:
“Critical brand colors must match the approved Pantone reference within Delta E ≤ 2.0 measured under D65 lighting.”
Also specify:
- Which colors are critical
- The reference target (Pantone, approved sample, digital standard)
- Measurement instrument standard
- Lighting condition

Delta E and substrate
The same ink will measure differently on different papers. Coated art paper reflects color more brightly than uncoated kraft. We account for this by:
- Printing color standards on the actual substrate
- Adjusting ink formulas for absorbency
- Using white undercoat when needed
If color consistency across multiple substrates is critical, we produce a color bridge chart showing the expected Delta E on each material.
Common mistakes
- Specifying Delta E without a reference. Delta E only has meaning when compared to a target.
- Measuring under store lighting. Measurements must be under standard D65 or agreed light source.
- Ignoring substrate difference. A color that works on coated paper may fail on kraft.
- Expecting Delta E 0. A Delta E of 0 is theoretically perfect and practically impossible at production scale.
Tools we use
