Offset fits medium-to-large runs with precise color, digital fits short runs and fast sampling, and flexo fits high-volume corrugated or flexible packaging. In our Dongguan factory, the decision usually comes down to run length, substrate and how tightly the color must match.
Many buyers ask which printing method is “best.” The honest answer is that each method is best under different conditions. This article compares the three technologies directly so you can make the right choice for your run.
How offset printing works
Offset lithography uses a flat image plate that transfers ink to a rubber blanket and then to the substrate. It relies on the principle that oil-based ink and water repel each other on the plate.
When we recommend offset
- Runs of 1,000 units or more

- Coated art paper or smooth board
- Jobs requiring Pantone color matching
Typical setup
We make one aluminum plate per color. For a four-color CMYK job, we make four plates. Plate making and press setup add fixed cost, so small runs cannot absorb it efficiently.
How digital printing works
Digital printing uses electrophotographic toner or inkjet heads to apply the image directly. There are no plates. The file goes straight from computer to press.

Typical setup
Setup is minimal. We calibrate the press, load the substrate and print. This makes digital fast, but the per-sheet cost is higher than offset at volume.
How flexographic printing works
Flexography uses a flexible relief plate wrapped around a cylinder. The plate rotates through ink and transfers the image to the substrate. It is well suited to roll-fed or sheet-fed corrugated and film.

Typical setup
Flexo requires plate making and lengthy press setup. Waste during setup can be significant, which is why flexo is inefficient for short runs.

Real example: launch with mixed methods
A German electronics accessory brand ordered packaging for a product launch. They needed 500 gift boxes for influencers and 10,000 retail cartons for stores. We printed the 500 influencer boxes digitally with personalized names. We printed the 10,000 retail cartons on offset to hit the brand’s Pantone color. Both jobs shipped from our Dongguan facility in the same week.
Color gamut and brand consistency
Offset has the largest color gamut for conventional packaging inks and handles Pantone spot colors natively. Digital gamut depends on the press and ink set. Modern digital presses can simulate many Pantone colors within a close tolerance, but critical brand colors should be proofed first.
Flexo uses anilox rollers to meter ink. Color variation can occur across a long run as ink viscosity changes. For that reason, we do not recommend flexo for color-critical retail packaging unless the job is large and simple.

Environmental notes
Digital printing creates less setup waste because there are no make-ready sheets. Offset uses more paper during setup but generates less waste per unit at volume. Flexo can use water-based inks, which reduces VOC emissions. The greenest method depends on run size and ink choice.
