Pricing custom packaging is not guessing. Every line item has a reason. After 20 years of quoting orders for global brands, we know exactly what drives the final number. This guide breaks it down so you can budget accurately and avoid surprises.
The five cost buckets
| Cost bucket | Typical share of total | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Material | 30–50% | Paper, board, corrugated, lamination film |
| Printing | 15–30% | Plates, ink, press time, color matching |
| Finishing | 10–25% | Lamination, foil, UV, embossing, die-cutting |
| Tooling | 5–15% | Cutting dies, printing plates, hot foil dies |
| Labor & overhead | 10–20% | Assembly, QC, packing, factory management |
Material cost: the biggest variable
Material is usually the largest single cost. The price depends on:
- Paper type: Art paper costs more than kraft.
- GSM/weight: Higher GSM means more fiber and higher cost.
- Specialty finishes: Metallic paper, black card and textured stocks carry premiums.
- Certification: FSC-certified paper can add 5–15% depending on grade.
For a standard folding box, switching from 250 gsm to 300 gsm art paper might increase material cost by 12–18%. Switching from art paper to kraft can reduce it by 20–30%.
Printing cost: setup vs. running
Printing has two parts: setup and running cost.
- Setup: Plates, color matching and machine preparation. This is fixed regardless of quantity.
- Running cost: Ink, press time and labor per unit.
For offset printing, setup is high but running cost is low. That is why unit cost drops sharply as quantity rises. Digital printing has no setup but higher running cost.
| Quantity | Offset unit cost | Digital unit cost |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | $1.20 | $0.55 |
| 2,000 | $0.35 | $0.48 |
| 10,000 | $0.12 | $0.42 |
Example based on a 4-color folding box.
Finishing cost: where upgrades add up
Finishing turns a printed sheet into a box. Common finishes include:
| Finish | Typical added cost per unit | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Matte/gloss lamination | $0.03–$0.08 | Protection and premium feel |
| Spot UV | $0.05–$0.12 | Logo pop, selective gloss |
| Hot foil stamping | $0.08–$0.20 | Metallic accents, luxury |
| Embossing/debossing | $0.06–$0.15 | Tactile branding |
| Soft-touch film | $0.10–$0.25 | High-end cosmetic packaging |
A cosmetic client added soft-touch lamination + spot UV + gold foil to their box. The finishing cost became 35% of the total, but the perceived value justified the retail price point.
Tooling and plate fees
Tooling is often overlooked in first quotes. It includes:
- Printing plates: $80–$150 per color for offset.
- Cutting dies: $80–$300 depending on complexity.
- Hot foil dies: $50–$150 per design.
- Embossing dies: $80–$200 per design.
For repeat orders, plates and dies can usually be reused, eliminating this cost on the second run.
MOQ: why it exists and how to work with it
MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is not arbitrary. It is the point where setup costs are spread thin enough to make the order viable.
Our standard MOQs:
| Product | Standard MOQ | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Folding box | 1,000 pcs | Offset plate setup needs volume |
| Rigid box | 500 pcs | Higher labor, lower material waste |
| Hang tag | 5,000 pcs | Small items, fast setup |
| Corrugated mailer | 1,000 pcs | Flexo plate and die setup |
| Paper bag | 2,000 pcs | Handle gluing and printing setup |
If your quantity is below MOQ, we can often use digital printing or combine with other orders. The trade-off is usually a higher unit cost.
Shipping cost: don’t forget the last mile
Shipping is not part of our factory quote, but it affects your landed cost. Factors include:
- Carton dimensions: Right-sized packaging reduces volume.
- Weight: Heavier GSM and rigid boxes increase freight cost.
- Incoterms: EXW, FOB, CIF or DDP change responsibility and cost.
- Mode: Sea freight is cheapest; air freight is fastest; sea-air is a middle ground.
For a US client shipping 50,000 boxes, switching from air to sea-air freight saved approximately $1,200 while adding only 8 days to delivery.
