How to Choose Paper GSM for Packaging: A Buyer's Guide

Paper GSM is not simply the thicker the better. Learn how to balance stiffness, tactile feel and cost when specifying kraft paper and card stock.

In modern custom packaging design, paper weight (GSM, grams per square meter) is not simply “the thicker the better.” It is a precise balance of physical support, tactile feel and production cost. As Gustave Eiffel, the father of modern engineering, said, “The beauty of a structure lies in its precise adaptation to the mission it must fulfill” (source).

For kraft paper and card-stock systems, the choice of GSM directly determines the finished box’s rigidity, crease flatness and the brand’s tactile impression in the consumer’s hand.

How to choose GSM from texture and structure

The final texture of a package depends on the three-dimensional match of GSM, box structure and product weight.

1. Lightweight touch feel (150 g – 200 g)

Suitable box types: tuck-end boxes, pharmaceutical/cosmetic outer liner boxes.

Texture characteristics: flexible feel, smooth opening and closing. Below 200 g the paper fibers retain high toughness, making them suitable for complex hot foil stamping, embossing and high-speed automatic corner-folding processes.

Professional advice: If the load requirement is below 300 g (e.g. tea bags, lightweight cosmetics), choosing this range ensures a crisp appearance while greatly reducing shipping weight and material cost (source).

2. Medium-weight structural feel (250 g – 300 g)

Suitable box types: drawer boxes, auto-lock bottom boxes, premium apparel shopping bags.

Texture characteristics: obvious substance, sharp edges. 300 g kraft paper has excellent bursting strength; even after repeated 90° or 180° folds, the crease remains flat and crack-free.

Professional advice: This is the golden GSM range for most high-end retail packaging. For products weighing between 500 g and 1.5 kg (e.g. bottled perfume, electronic accessories), 300 g card stock delivers full protective confidence.

3. Rigid heavy-load feel (350 g+)

Suitable box types: rigid setup boxes, mailers, heavy card liners.

Texture characteristics: board-like hardness and extremely high compression resistance. As the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI) notes, “The anti-collapse ability of high-GSM board under logistics stress is non-linearly positively correlated with paper thickness” (source).

Professional advice: When a single 350 g kraft sheet still cannot meet the rigidity requirement of a large gift box, the usual solution is lamination: a 250 g kraft face paper plus grey board or corrugated (E-flute/F-flute). This retains fine surface print quality while gaining the protective performance of a rigid box.

Two common pitfalls to avoid

Ignoring paper bulk and only looking at GSM

Papers with the same GSM can have different bulk: the higher the bulk, the thicker the actual caliper. When choosing 300 g card stock, always check the paper thickness in microns (μm) to avoid lids that are too tight or too loose.

Blindly pursuing high GSM and causing cracked edges

Uncoated kraft paper above 350 g, especially after dark printing or lamination, is prone to corner bursting if the die-cutting crease width is not set correctly. In automated production, the creasing matrix must be precisely matched to the paper specification.
