Art paper: the versatile workhorse
Art paper is clay-coated woodfree paper. The coating gives it a smooth surface that holds fine detail and bright color, which is why 80% of retail folding boxes use it.
We typically recommend:
- 128–157 gsm: Sleeves, wraps and lightweight boxes
- 200–250 gsm: Standard cosmetic and electronics folding boxes
- 300–400 gsm: Heavy-duty boxes, display cards and rigid box covers
A skincare brand we work with uses 250 gsm art paper with matte lamination for their serum boxes. The material is stiff enough to stand on shelf, light enough to keep shipping weight down, and printable enough to reproduce skin-tone gradients accurately.
Kraft paper: the sustainability signal
Kraft paper is unbleached and uncoated. It is weaker than art paper at the same gsm but communicates “natural” and “recyclable” without extra printing.

Greyboard: rigid box structure
Greyboard, also called chipboard or bookboard, is thick pressed paperboard used for rigid gift boxes. It is not usually printed directly; instead, printed art paper or specialty paper is wrapped around it.
